THE COMPANY which completed the extensive sea defences and revitalisation project on Old Colwyn promenade have hailed the work.

The near-£18million, three-year project began in May 2021, and despite an initial 18-month time frame, was extended until 2024.

The project included building a 720m long rock barricade in front of the existing seawall using 160,000 tonnes of rock, raising the promenade and road by 1.5 metres, and adding a fishing platform and new beach access steps.

The promenade and road reopened earlier this month, with just handrails for the new steps, some fencing and furniture needed to be added.

The company who delivered the project, Griffiths, praised its completion, adding that its team had combatted coastal and weather conditions expertly.

A Griffiths spokesperson said: "A major milestone has been achieved with the reopening of the promenade at Old Colwyn to traffic and the public.

"This marks completion of the flood protection phase of coastal defence works adjacent to Old Colwyn Arches and raising the promenade level by 1.5 metres, incorporating improvements to the active travel route for pedestrians and cyclists.

"Installation of the remaining fencing, beacons and street furniture is nearing completion.

"This is a notable and proud achievement for our dedicated project team after three years of working in challenging coastal, tidal and weather conditions."
